Although Halloween has passed here, Vampires are still everywhere you look. Please tell me you've been watching True Blood on HBO. I'm completely obsessed! The premise is basically the Japanese (b/c they smart n shit) invented a synthetic blood which enables Vampires to leave among humans as a race. It's all about Vampire-Human relations and Vampire stereotypes and "Fang-Bangers". So good. And then last night I went to see a movie called "Let The Right One In", a Swedish indie film about a shy little boy who is bullied at school but befriends a young vampire girl. It's a beautiful film and only feeds my current Vamp obsession. Don't even get me started on Twilight...

It's taken me a long time to like velvet (fabric, not the brand). It always felt kind of Ren Fair or goth (bad goth i mean, there is a good goth) or "craft-lady" or just not not special enough. Today I am a new woman, a woman who likes VELVET! I even have a secret crush on blue crushed velvet. Mostly I'm just into these velvet leggings or velvet used in silhouettes besides an obvious blazer or pant from The Gap. see? velvet feels fresh all of a sudden, doesnt it?

I just picked up a copy of his new book called My Custom Van, a collection of short stories that will make you laugh so hard your face will explode all over your face! if you have a really short attention span and like funny stories then I recommend this book to you! I checked out his website and was overjoyed to discover that he's a regular blogger. Now I can obsessively track of his whereabouts and his goings ons. Here's a sample from his blog:

My Daughter’s First Day of School
The school year started in my little town today, and we sent our daughter off to her first day of kindergarten. She did not want to go. When I asked her why she told me that she was scared.
“You should be scared,” said. “Did you know that one out of three children reports being bullied in school?”
She wasn’t sure what “bullying” meant, so I called her a faggot and pushed her down the stairs. “That’s bullying,” I said.
(For the record, I didn’t push her down all the stairs. Just the top stairs that lead to a landing. She probably fell down, at most, five stairs.)

Hilarious, am I right? Read the book, you can probably finish it at the bookstore standing up which is great because then you don't have to pay for it.

Friday night we caught the Leslie show at this heavy metal/butt rock bar called the Satyricon. I brought my friend KT with me, she's from the midwest so she "gets it". Before the show we were waiting in line for the bathrooms and it was just KT and I hanging out waiting for the show to start when one of the bathroom doors popped open a crack and Leslie (in the flesh) stuck her gold-lame covered head out. She ushered KT in and I remained in the hallway alone and utterly jealous that Leslie invited KT to pee with her! When KT came out she said she asked Leslie (while on the pot) what she was going to bring to the show to make it better, what would she do that hasn't been done before. Apparently Leslie placed her index finger across KT's lips to shush her and said her performance would speak for itself. Thats how cool Leslie is, she lets people pee in her bathroom and she gives good show. I have the pictures to prove it!

Says Lanvin head designer, Alber Elbaz, "I've started conceptualizing all of this not so long ago," said the designer "I was very pleased when I started working with Acne. They're just young, energetic sexy Swedes and our partnership really wasn't about signing hardcore contracts, it was really just about creating something that was mutually fun and creative."

Friday night we caught the 37th MIA show this year. I don't mean to sound bored, it's consistently a great show. She always lets people get on stage to dance with her and she climbs the speaker towers and stuff so it's pretty fun. One of the best things about where I live is the amount of really great thrift stores. I'm not talking about the overpriced Goodwill on Main Street, I'm talking about the mom & pop thrift shops where they don't extra over price things for being "vintage". Despite the photos taken I actually did walk away with some amazing pieces. I bought a ceramic Greek God bust that I'm cleaning up today and some new tops. I also bought a leather vase with gold lion door knockers all over it. Not the right look for my house but could make a good gift for someone down the road. Check out these oddities!

Friday night half of this town was the The Kills show. I forgot my camera so I lifted this picture from Solene's Blog (merci!). Let me tell you all the reasons this show was so good: Alison's leopard print shirt, Ciggie hanging out of Jamie's mouth while he played guitar, Alison's death stare into the crowd, the fan that blew everyone's sweaty hair around, the hot people in the crowd, the left-over-from-the-day-heat. When it was over, Solene, Sally and myself hopped in a rickshaw and were driven to the Magic Gardens where we ended up just hanging out on the curb like a bunch of hookers. It was a good night.

A seal has been caught on camera trying to have sex with a penguin.

This seems to be the first example seen in the wild of a sexual escapade between a mammal and a different kind of vertebrate such as a bird, reptile or fish, "although some mammals are known to have attempted sexual relief with inanimate — including dead things — objects," said researcher Nico de Bruyn, a mammal ecologist at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
One summer morning, scientists observing elephant seals on a beach on Marion Island near the Antarctic spotted a young male Antarctic fur seal subduing a king penguin.
"At first we thought it was hunting the penguin, but then it became clear that his intentions were rather more amorous," de Bruyn recalled today via email.
The roughly 240-pound seal subdued the 30-pound adult penguin by lying on it. The hapless bird of unknown sex struggled, rapidly flapping its flippers and attempting to stand and flee, without luck.
The seal then alternated between resting on the penguin and thrusting its pelvis at the bird in vain attempts to insert its penis for 45 minutes. Natural, unsuccessful sexual escapades by this variety of seal with members of its own species may last as long as this penguin assault did, "but yes, it is quite a long time and thus unusual," de Bruyn told LiveScience.

The seal then abruptly gave up, moving to sea and completely ignoring the target of its affections. The penguin apparently did not suffer any injury. The scientists detailed their findings in the May issue of the Journal of Ethology.

Sexual harassment is common in the animal kingdom — "Homo sapiens are often testimony to that," de Bruyn said.

Many species perform some form of sexual harassment on members of their own species, "for a variety of reasons many of which are hotly debated," he added.

Many species of seal are polygynous, where one male mates with many females. The males often fight each other to control females.

"This system thus promotes extreme aggression in males towards each other, and if a male cannot control a beach, this aggression may spill over to sexual aggression directed at outlying females, pups or even in rare cases other seal species," de Bruyn said.

And this sexual aggression apparently might leap well beyond the species gap.

The Antarctic fur seals of Marion Island are the only seals known to eat king penguins. The thrill of the hunt felt by the seal the researchers saw may have channeled into its sex drive, as the mating season had just come to an end.

"It may have wanted to eat it and half-way through the chase changed its mind," de Bruyn speculated. "I personally believe the link between aggressive and sexual behavior is evolutionarily far closer linked than we currently believe. This has obvious implications for humans."

The last episode just ended 31 minutes ago and I'm feeling the symptoms of withdrawal as I write this. I know what would help pass the time until next Monday: Gossip Girl Chat Room! Last week I signed up for the GG chat and I totally spoiled it for someone. They were pi-essed! Whatevs, if you're a true fan you'll just watch the show and then nothing will be spoiled. I also tried to create my own GG avatar but that program is built for 15 year olds. I'm not as smart as a 15 year old and therefore failed to enter the GG Second Life. On a side note, how scary are teens?

She probably spent those same months day dreaming of the moment she walked into the Marriot, the record would skip and a beam of light would focus on her and her glorious gold dress. The image of Sonar 2008 is mainly in video format and can be seen on the Internet. It consists of seven 1-minute recordings in home video format, filmed in a in mysterious location and showing beings with a disconcerting genetic make-up, that are half human and half animal.
The videos are shot in the back of a "genetic experimentation" laboratory in a remote location in central China . The beings that are the results of biomolecular experimentation are filmed in this setting. The ultimate objective of these experiments is to create a new species of pet like those that used to be exhibited in travelling circuses, like the alligator woman or snake boy.
The pets are shown locked in cages and laid out on a kitchen table while they timidly answer the questions asked in Chinese from outside the cage by unseen speakers.
These videos have been gradually uploaded, as viral marketing, to the fake website http://www.b1158.cn/b1158.html and on YouTube, with no links to the Sonar festival made clear. The result has been spectacular - there were 180,000 hits in only two days, it was no. 13 in the YouTube "Most Viewed" ranking" and no. 3 in the Science and Technology section.

Sorry I haven't posted lately, shits been busy yo! Work may be taking over my life but at least my job gets me to LA once in a while. Most recently I was shipped off to LA for some paid slavery at the perfect time: Coachella! I arrived in LA on Friday night, did some wardrobe consulting with my BFF Caitlin and by morning we were enroute to Indio, CA. My friend Marc, hooked us up with all-access passes which is really the only reason we went. Not that we're above seeing a show from the audience, it's just so much better with air conditioned bathrooms and golf carts to transport you from stage to stage. Walking can be like, totally hard you know? Highlights of the festival include: festival people watching (i never want to shop at Urban Outfitters or American Apparel again!!) Prince! Portishead, Hot Chip, reuniting with Frankie Sharp and his mad posse: Jeremy, Corey, Agyness, Anouk, Carey, MIA, Sia, Cool Kids... The ultimate highlight was the Jeremy Scott after party at the Frank Sinatra Mansion in Palm Springs. Need I say more??

Dish Graduation

For over 3 years now my man and I have been eating off plastic kids dishes at home. Even when we have a nice dinner everyone eats off these blue and orange plastic dishes that we got at the Dutch equivilent of a Target. It's getting old, time to upgrade to come real grown up dishes! Thing is, we have different ideas about what dishes to get. My dream would be to have every dish and fork and knife and cup to be different but somehow coordinate. Some would be from the thrift store and some would be Versace and others would be from Ikea. An elegant mix of patterns and colors. My man thinks they should all be simple and white so the food can speak for itself. I get that but what about something like this? Mix white dinner dishes with a patterened dish like this Marimekko one and simple glasses but maybe some black silverware. do they make black silverware? Anyway, i call that a good compromise.

Saturday night a few of us headed out to some sketchy 80's club night in the hippy part of town. It was a little grim at first but at 11:30 the place filled with goths. I haven't seen goths like that since the mid-nineties or something. One of the gentleman who was with the goth crew (but looked more like a turn of the century guy) befriended us and tried to recruit us to his dark gothy world- inviting us to "Champagne & Croquet" in the park and a Moulin Rouge night coming up. My friend and I entertained the idea of showing up at the following week's Vampire Party dressed as goths and say we were from LA if anyone wondered why the hadn't met us before. So, the most exciting part of the night was we learned about "Steampunk". No one else I told about this has heard of this movement but now you can call me an expert becasue I googled it all day. So fascinating, just as soon as you think you know all the weird subcultures of this country....

Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. I'm not sure what to make of this collection, have you seen it? I dont love everything but a highlight for me are these floral jeans. They are so hideous that they're genius. They remind me of the Guess jeans of my youth, the ones with the blue roses all over them that I managed to wear with everything. I think this pair is so horrible it just might work.

The sack dress on the left just seems so easy and breezy, thats a yes for me.

Spotlight on: THE BOX, NYC

2 weeks ago I was on a business trip in NYC and I got set up on a blind girl date with this cutie who has her own street wear line. Neither of us are really gay so it was more like our mutual friend thought we could be friends. It was a little awkward at first but she brought her sister along and after the first glass of wine we were already opening up to each other and letting loose. After hitting a wine bar and some street wear party we ended up at this place called The Box. I had never heard of it but now I'm preaching the Good Word of The Box. Even though there was a line, the locals I was with managed to not only get us in at the front of the line but as soon as we sat down it was all front row, champagne and strawberries. The Box is like a cabaret show but really outer limits. The show was hosted by Raven O, a renowned performer in the cabaret industry and the opening act was a gang of gorillas that came out into the audience and molested people and when they got on stage they were actually hot naked women inside gorilla suits. They hot gorilla chicks grabbed an unsuspecting audience member and took him on stage to undress him and rub their parts all over him. The acts got more and more obscene but also more and more entertaining. I highly recommend a visit to The Box next time you're in NYC. You will be talking about for weeks afterwards..

Teeth- Not for the faint of heart

Last night I saw that new movie called "Teeth". It's about a sexually repressed high school girl who serves as the spokesperson for abstinence at her school. When she and her purity-loving boy friend take things a little too far at the old watering hole she, or really he, discovers hersecret mutation and he becomes the first victim of her Vagina Dentata: Vagina with Teeth. This movie is perfect for groups that you can gasp and shout with but I would recommend staying away from it if you're on a hot date. It's kind of a mood killer. Anyway, check out the trailer from the movie and when you see it let me know what you thought.

As I mentioned in my first entry, this brand Pegleg is what's hot. Remember in Saved by the Bell where they spent the summer working at the Beach Resort? The line kind of embodies that summer. Highlights include: dropped armhole tanks, patchwork board shorts and cardigans with sail boats. I consider the line to be completely unisex. You must check it out. The whole Pegleg team is charming, adorable and have got something really originally going.

Hungry Eyes Chapter 1

Good Evening future fans of "Hungry Eyes". Welcome to my first blog entry. I was inspired recently on my most recent trip to Las Vegas for the MAGIC show. I work for an apparel company and was out there showing our new collection but I saw so many inspiring things. I also saw many vomit-inducing things that made me laugh. For instance, I saw this new brand called Pegleg that blew me away. I was already planning what I was going to wear with their floral print jeans (duh, white tee and vest). I also saw this guy in the lobby who had a totally normal lower body but whose torso and arms were so inflated I doubted he could clap his hands. He had a large bandage on the back of one bicep and i imagined muscle and steroids oozing out of a cut. I started this blog because I wanted to tell you about all the good things and all the bad things I get to see in my life and include images where ever possible.
